A fire that has been burning since the first century: Manikarnika Ghat. It is the only place where the major events of life such as birth and death become a mere play. It is also believed that dying and being cremated in Varanasi would liberate one from the endless cycles of birth and death, and free the soul from the cycle of reincarnation. Varanasi is often referred to as the "City of the Dead" due to its association with cremation and the belief that dying here brings salvation. It is a place where the living and the departed coexist, and where rituals are performed to honour ancestors.
